2018 A Geological Exploration of the Crater Lake Rim

Mt. Mazama painting by Paul Rockwood
Mt. Mazama eruption painting by Paul Rockwood

Instructor: Larry Broeker
Dates: Friday-Saturday, July 20-21, 2018
Location: Meet at the Prospect Library
Tuition: $75

On Friday evening in Prospect, we’ll begin our immersion in Rogue-Umpqua geology with a
one-hour program on the Western and High Cascades geologic subprovinces. After a one-hour
intro on Saturday morning, we’ll spend all day Saturday traversing the Crater Lake Rim Road, stopping at key geological and botanical sites for discussion. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the origin of the present-day Crater Lake caldera (ancestral Mt. Mazama), as well as its varied geomorphic and volcanic features. Both introductory programs take place in the Prospect branch of Jackson County Public Libraries. Lodging is on your own; a list of local options will be provided.
