Mosses, liverworts, and hornworts perform essential roles in local ecosystems, providing buffers and collecting water and nutrients for vascular plants. They’re also important indicators of habitat quality. Meet some of the 20,000 often overlooked bryophyte species, an especially diverse community in the Klamath- Siskiyou Bioregion. We’ll cover basic bryophyte biology, learn to recognize common species in the field, and become familiar with simple microscopy. Class time will alternate between classroom lectures, labs, and fieldwork.
How bryophytes helped "mudden" the earth 458 million years ago (from Science magazine).
