2019 Birding Upper Klamath Lake by Canoe
Instructors: Kevin Spencer, M.A. and Dave Haupt, B.S. Date: Saturday, June 29, 2019 Location: Meet at Wood River Wetlands, Klamath County, OR Tuition: $165 Bring your own canoe or kayak: $60
We’ll start early with a walk through the Wood River Wetlands to enhance our chances of seeing riparian birds such as Willow Flycatchers and Black-capped Chickadees. Then we’ll move down the road to Petric Park, have an early lunch, and launch our canoes/ kayaks midmorning. Paddling out the channel to Agency Lake, we’ll observe birds in their peak breeding plumage, song and display behavior. Listen for the loud “kalwp” of Piedbilled Grebes and pumping sounds of the American Bitttern as we paddle unobtrusively in cattail, bulrush and wocus habitats. With possible views of “rushing” Western and Clark’s Grebes on the open water, the day will also be an intriguing hunt for birds performing mating dances and behaviors. All canoeing will take place in a sheltered part of the lake. After we take out back at Petric Park, you have the option to continue land birding with the instructors. Canoes provided by The Ledge in Klamath Falls.
