Modoc County in northeastern California features many natural landmarks and diverse habitats where birds nest and breed, from the edge of Lava Beds National Monument to Modoc National Wildlife Refuge in Alturas, to the Warner Mountains and Surprise Valley beyond. We’ll follow basin-and-range species, beginning with an owl walk Thursday evening at Lava Beds, and early morning birding Friday, then head east, stopping to observe woodland species and Refuge shorebirds in Alturas. Friday evening we’ll set up camp in the Surprise Valley and hopefully catch early Saturday morning views of Bobolinks and other blackbird family members active in pastureland, as well as raptors and sagebrush species. Sunday morning, we’ll work our way back through the forest and into mountainous terrain in search of high-elevation songbirds.
