Soil and Leaf Litter Insects

Instructor: Dana Ross, M.S.
Date: Saturday, April 25, 2015
Location: Deer Creek Center, Selma
Tuition: $35

When you step into the forest there are literally thousands of little insect and arthropod feet holding you up! Enormous numbers of invertebrates dwell within the leaf litter, the fallen and rotting wood and within the soil itself. This course will introduce you to the organisms that make up the amazing insect biodiversity found living on and beneath the forest floor —beetles, ants, termites, centipedes, millipedes, Collembola and more – and will enlighten you about their fascinating lives and the essential ecological services that they provide. The course will involve a morning slide show and lecture. We will then gather samples from the Deer Creek property and see how many kinds of insects and arthropods we can find and identify.
